A Visit to the Saree Shops

There is no reduction in the enthusiasm of the people of Mysore though the Dasera has ended. Celebrations are on. A lot of exhibitions are on. A lot of sales are on. People are pouring their hearts out.

The Dasera ended on Saturday and people got a bonus Sunday and Gandhi Jayanti on Monday. The stores have planned extended discount offers to allure their customers in line with the festive mood.

All the traffic signals in the central city are crowded and there are long traffic jams which are not so busy in other times of the year. More crowd seems to be the result of extra controlling by the civic administration.

There is no slowing down of the gala celebrations with Diwali nearing. Perhaps the marriage season is also on the cards as many people throng the saree stores and are buying in bundles.

I had the opportunity of visiting two saree shops today, credit goes to my wife, one being an upmarket exclusive showroom and the other being a whole seller for the masses.

We found young ladies trying different expensive sarees one after another and their relatives examining standing and sitting in circles and semi-circles.

They don’t want to spare any saree for the lifetime event of the bride for which they might have to repent in future. And guess what? They are spending so much money, they have all the right to bring all the sarees off the shelves.

Sarees to the range of 20K is news to me. I appreciate the patience of the salespersons who open up the sarees one by one drape the customer and again fold them and put them back in the shelves. That’s how you can find all the energy getting converted into money.

Old parts of a city are always very attractive to me since they are nostalgic and are very different to experience. The wholesaler shop we visited, is housed in an old building and that seemed to be a residential building.

You enter a room and another room becomes visible. Small doors thick walls. There is very little space between the two adjoining buildings. And this shop extends to the other building with small steel platform links.

You climb two steps and get into one department again you go down two steps you reach another. They have not even left the balconies empty. Once you enter the shop you cannot see the sky.

Only dark alleys when you move from one part of the building to the other. The whole place is a storage and the whole place is a showroom. All sarees scattered and all people scattered.

It is even hard to understand who is selling and who is buying. It is such a unique experience. A lot of crowd moving from room to room. Endless length of sarees getting unfolded and folded all days in a week round the year.

At this rate, this should go to the Book of World Records for being handled the maximum length of sarees to date. A salesperson Ganesh Babu told that the clothes market is very competitive and they are open every day.

It is nice to feel the energy flow. Every day is special. People buying for different occasions one of the basic needs of the human race which demarcates them from the animal world.

Why not open a clothes shop myself?? Isn’t that an obvious idea peeping in the mind!!
